How do you get rid of ticks in a dogs ears?

I was just cleaning my dog and saw that she had a huge number of ticks in her ears although she’s been recently treated with Frontline and with a shot to prevent mange that usually kills fleas and ticks also. I can’t understand how she has ticks in her ears and I don’t know if I can put tick medicine in her ears or not. A neighbor suggested rubbing alcohol, another suggested pulling them out one by one (DISGUSTING) and another neighbor said vaseline will smother them. What do you guys think? Can I put Frontline Tick Repellant in her ears or are her ears too sensitive for such strong medicine?
GREAT ANSWERS!

A lot is approximately 50…absolutely smothered in ticks…too numberous to count!

The nearest vet is over 150 miles away. I live in a very remote area and must do most dog care including shots myself.

I love the idea of treating my yard and will try that. I also know I should have her examined for tick related diseases soon.

I think I’ll start by washing her ears out with hydrogen peroxide as that seems to be a common consensus. I’ll also cover them in some vaseline as that’s easy enough but as far as picking out so many ticks myself, I’ll just wait and see what happens by morning.

Poor dog. I agree, I would be going nuts if I had that in my ears! A good treat and lots of love it will be!!!

Thanks everyone!
HEY YOU! I’m not a wuss! Pulling so many could easily cause an infection! I’m amazed she can hear with that many bugs in her ears! Its not just a few!!! She doesn’t have any on other parts of her body…just her ears. I don’t think she’ll lie still for as long as it will take to do a surgery like this. I’M SHOCKED AND HAD NO IDEA!!

It was less than a month ago that I checked her and there was nothing!!!
I’ll have to get someone to help me.

Put the Vaseline on them and when they fall off, burn them or drown them in alcohol.Don’t crush them, because they can release bacteria when crushed. Then get some Frontline Plus.Or,you could mix a little bit of the tick repellent in with the Vaseline before you put it on them.Clean her ears well afterward.

Hey,I was just thinking,do you have any ear mite medication? I was looking at the ingredients and it’s pyrethrins, which is also used to kill fleas and ticks. So,if you have any,you could put that in the dog’s ears;it just might help.

How do I get rid of ticks on my lawn?

Ticks are really bad this year in our region and they’ve made their way into our yard on onto us and our dogs. What’s the best method for killing ticks in the yard?

I did read that you could dust the yard and gardens with lime, but that raised soil pH and we already have very alkaline soil, so adding lime would be a bad thing.

Beneficial nematodes.
